Hemp rug (Mountain Grass) Area Rug Characteristics

Our hemp rugs, often referred to as Mountain Grass or mountaingrass rugs, are made of a durable grass native to high altitude slopes. Our hemp rugs are made from the reed of grasses imported directly from China. The reeds of the hemp plant are thick and rigid, and the skin is non-porous and smooth to the touch. These qualities give the fiber a slight natural sheen in warm tan hues.

After harvesting the long strands of hemp are dried and spun into yarns. The yarns are then woven into a variety of designs to produce a smooth broadloom with a long lasting finish. The material undergoes very little processing before being spun into cords, and depending on harvest conditions, it may retain some moisture when woven, and carry a natural, hay-like scent. This will dissipate over time. Hemp is a natural fiber that will absorb moisture, and is susceptible to mold or mildew in a wet environment. We do not recommend any of our hemp weaves for bathrooms, kitchens, basements or other damp or humid environments.

Hemp rugs are relatively easy to maintain as dirt does not cling to the fibers. The natural  tan hues of the hemp rug do not show dirt readily, and regular vacuuming is the best method for keeping its appearance fresh. We do recommend daily, or at least weekly, vacuuming  with a good quality vacuum.

Clean-up of spills is dependant on the type of spill, and we recommend you follow our stain specific recommendations. The important thing is to try to clean the spill without the use of liquids. Dry spills are easiest cleaned by scraping the material with a blunt blade (such as a teaspoon or butter knife), gently scooping up the material from the edge towards the center.

Liquid spills should be immediately blotted or patted dry with a clean absorbent cloth. Do not rub the spill area as this can force the liquid further into the fiber. Again, work from the edge of the spill toward the center to contain the spill, and follow this treatment with our stain recommendations above.
