Paper rug characteristics

Surprisingly strong and durable, paper floorcoverings are a practical and decorative option with a clean, crisp definition which works well in today's interiors. Paper rugs are a relatively new choice for upscale designers, though the process for creating yarn from wood pulp was introduced in the 19th century. Our paper rugs are made from twisted paper cord from conifer pulp sourced from managed growth forests in cold northern climates. Only virgin paper is used, and during the blending process, resins are added to coat the fibers. The resinated pulp results in a highly durable high wet strength paper, and a durable weave that is less sensitive to moisture than some other natural fibers.

A wax emulsion is applied to the paper to act as a lubricant as the paper is twisted into a weavable cord. The wax coating adds to the yarn’s water resistance.  The rug is not waterproof by any means, but the emulsion added to the fiber allows additional time to blot spills. In addition, the fiber is smooth to the touch, and  dirts tend not to cling to its surface. Regular vacuuming is the best method for keeping its appearance fresh. We do recommend daily, or at least weekly, vacuuming with a good quality vacuum.

Clean-up of spills is dependant on the type of spill, and we recommend you follow our stain specific recommendations. The important thing is to try to clean the spill without the use of liquids. Dry spills are easiest cleaned by scraping the material with a blunt blade (such as a teaspoon or butter knife), gently scooping up the material from the edge towards the center. Liquid spills should be immediately blotted or patted dry with a clean absorbent cloth. Do not rub the spill area as this can force the liquid further into the fiber. Again, work from the edge of the spill toward the center to contain the spill, and follow this treatment with our stain recommendations above.

Most people are surprised when they first hear about paper rugs. Paper is a strong, smooth, and durable natural fiber  which adds a distinctive style to your home. It is beautiful and rare, and a good choice is you are concerned about the environment and using environmentally friendly products. Paper rugs and paper sisal rugs are comfortable and smooth underfoot. They are rated for both residential and office commercial settings.
